Seals in Ireland

Ireland is home to two native seal species: 1. Grey Seal (Halichoerus grypus) • One of the rarest seal species globally but found in significant numbers around Ireland. • Recognizable by its long snout and larger size compared to common seals. • Can be seen along rocky coasts, particularly in areas like the Blasket Islands, Saltee Islands, and the west coast. • Pup season: Autumn (September to November), with white fluffy-coated pups born onshore. 2. Common Seal (Harbour Seal) (Phoca vitulina) • Smaller and more widespread globally, though still important in Ireland. • Shorter, rounder snout, giving a "dog-like" face. • Found in estuaries, sheltered bays, and sandy shores, with large populations in areas like Dublin Bay, Galway Bay, and Bantry Bay. • Pup season: Summer (June to July), with pups born on beaches or sandbanks, ready to swim almost immediately.
