Grey squirrel in Ireland
The Eastern Grey Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) is an introduced species from North America. It was first introduced to Ireland in 1911 and has since spread to cover most of the eastern half of the island. Grey squirrels are larger and less agile than red squirrels, with a grey coat and a bushy tail. They are more adaptable than red squirrels and can thrive in a wider range of habitats, including urban areas.
